Transylvania & Dracula
Itinerary:Day 1. Sibiu (10 km)Arrival at Sibiu. Meeting with the guide and transfer at the hotel/ pension in Sibiu. Accommodation for 2 nights. Dinner and program planning with the guide. Day 2. Sibiu - European Cultural Capital 2007 & Surroundings (50 km)In the morning, after breakfast we make a city tour of the European Cultural Capital 2007. We will visit, among others the Evangelical Church, the Council Tower, The large and the Small Square, the Liars' Bridge, the Peasants' Market etc. Lunch break in Sibiu. In the afternoon we drive to Cisnadie, Cisnadioara and the shepherd village Rasinari. Dinner at one of the local families. Return to Sibiu. Day 3: On the margins of the South Carpathians: Sibiu - Sambata de Sus - Brasov (160 km)First we drive to Carta. Then we go further into the mountains until we reach the Orthodox monastery at Sambata de Sus. Passing through Fagaras we arrive late in the afternoon in Brasov. Accommodation for 3 nights in Brasov. Day 4: Brasov, commercial centre in the Middle Ages, the city of the bears today (60 km) Meeting in our office and city tour in Brasov (3 hours walking time), where we will see the most important cultural objectives of the city from the Middle Ages: the town hall square (we visit it on the inside too), the Black Church (we visit it on the inside too), the Weaver Bastion (we visit it on the inside too), the White and Black Tower, etc. Lunch break in the city. In the afternoon we go to Zarnesti where Mr Gigi Popa will tell you more about the "Carpathian Large Carnivores Project". He will accompany you on a short trip where you will observe the wilderness (traces of brown bears, wolves and lynxes). Dinner and powerpoint presentation of the EU financed project in Zarnesti. Return to Brasov. Day 5: Citadels and fortified churches of the Barsa Land: Rasnov, Bran, Harman, Prejmer (150 km)Today we visit Bran, where the famous Dracula castle is. Next we go to the Peasant's Citadel in Rasnov, to the fortified church in Harman and to the one in Prejmer , the best preserved and the most representative fortified church in Barsa Land. Day 6. Projects in Transylvania: Racos, Viscri, Saschiz (200 km)Today you are going to learn more about the restoration projects of the Transylvanian villages but also about the protection of nature. Firstly we drive to Racos, a natural monument, the only place in Europe to see vertical geological traces of a volcano. The volcano was cut vertically during the year's long stone exploitation that took place there. Next we go to Viscri where to see a village in buildup. The project is sustained by the Mihai Eminescu trust foundation (http://www.mihaieminescutrust.org/). In the project are included other villages such as Saschiz too- here the young people are trying to bring back to life the old manufactures. This new dynamic of an almost dead region because of the migration of the Saxons out of Transylvania is also very visible in this village. Overnight and dinner in Sighisoara. Day 7: UNESCO in Transylvania: Sighisoara, Biertan, Valea Viilor (210 km)The most important and best preserved cities and fortified churches from the Middle Ages in Transylvania are part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. We will learn more about them today. Firstly we make a city tour in Sighisoara where we have the following highlights: the covered staircase, the hill church, the clock tower and many other. Next we drive to Biertan to visit this imposing fortified church where the Bishop's residence for almost 300 years was. Afterwards we drive to Medias for lunch and in order to visit the fortified church castle. In the afternoon we go to the fortified church in Valea Viilor, which is 705 years old. Return to Sibiu in the evening for dinner. Overnight in Sibiu. Day 8: Departure (10 km) Transfer to the airport / train station in Sibiu Included services
